Assuming the by renting your site, you mean you are an affiliate, you still promote it the same way you would a site you had more control over.
You cannot change the meta tags, etc. but you can still advertise it, submit it to search engines, use the address in your signature block, and mention the URL on discussion boards such as this.
You can also create mirror webpages on some of the free websites. Post a banner on the mirror site leading to your affiliate site. The mirror site should be a hobby site, with the intent being to funnel some of that traffic to your business website.
