You're correct that the e-mail option line is somewhat "hidden" on the page. And you're correct in your scenario (2) that if a person doesn't see that line and doesn't like HTML, they will want "outta here fast." BUT -- as I previously mentioned, so far every person that has visited the "Subscribe" page does subscribe.
When they do subscribe, the autoresponse message does tell them what to do if they are unable to access the web page or would PREFER to receive the letter in e-mail format.
Now, I realize that the autoresponse message is "after the fact." Still, there have been a few (very few) that have submitted a request email format. So, the option is there.
I'll think about your suggestion to move the P.S. line to a more prominent place. However, since I'm marketing it as a web page newsletter, I'm not sure how prominent I want to make that option.
Again, thanks for your thoughts. It's always interesting to hear what other folks think -- which is why these forums are so much fun!
